What are zoccoli?

You don't know zoccoli, do you? In the 15th century the first zoccoli appeared in Italy.
At that time zoccoli got a 20 cm heel in the rear and a kind of high plateau
in the front. Probably the first zoccoli might have been also the first plateau high heels.
It was very arduous to walk in those zoccoli, but of course they were pretty stylish and so
zoccoli got popular in the trendsetting urban centres of style, arts and culture like Venice
for example.

Today in Italy all wooden sandals are called zoccoli. Even clogs would be called zoccoli,
but they are not so popular in Italy. Zoccoli are wooden open summer sandals which you will
meet everywhere along the Italian seaside in the bathing areas.

Very popular are the Scholl Pescura Heel models, which are produced in Bozen.
These classic exercise sandals and copies of them can be found everywhere at the seaside.
While heeled exercise sandals support a well shaped leg, tall beautiful women like models
also like to wear flatties, the Scholl Pescura Flat, which was the first version, that was created
by Dr. William Scholl in Chicago in the 1950s. These exercise sandals were made to feel like
walking barefoot and that is the reason, why they are so beloved in warm and sunny areas.

Also in the 50s the German company Berkemann in Hamburg introduced its
exercise sandals Berkemann B100. These flat exercise sandals had a shaped footbed,
designed by Prof. Thomsen to exercise feet and legs while walking.
In the 60s the Berkemann B100 exercise sandals boomed and at the beginning
of the 70s the first millions of B100 were already sold.

During the 70s and 80s exercise sandals and clogs were quite popular in Germany
and shoes like the Berkemann B100, its heeled sister Berkemann Peggy or clogs like
the Berkemann Standard Toeffler could be seen everywhere. This boom decreased in the
mid 80s and interest in exercise sandals or clogs somehow reduced.

In the 1990s Scholl tried to start a revival of exercise sandals and today they
are quite successful with their zoccoli. Sarah Jessica Parker wore babypink Scholl
Pescura exercise sandals with a white polka dots black designer skirt.
Millions could follow her on TV in "Sex In The City" so suited.
Today Scholl proudly presents a wide gallery of celebrities wearing their zoccoli
in movies or in public. The Scholl Pescura exercise sandals can also be admired
in the meantime even at the Museum Of Modern Arts in New York

The Scholl success story is not only based on their classic Pescura models.
Today Scholl presents an impressing collection of very stylish heeled zoccoli.
Models like Diva, Trick, Deluxe, Arrogance, Spicy or Tigress can stand
any comparison to designer shoes.

In Germany the new zoccoli boom becomes a story about stylish fashionable shoes
like the heeled Scholl sandals or models from fashion companies with modern
attractive images like Zara, Mango, Esprit, Candie's and others.

An outstanding zoccolo is the Berkemann Peggy. It is rather wellshaped and
still trendy with its nice heel and patent red strap.
And the Peggy is wellknown as a "lady-cult" of sorts since 30 years.
Maybe, this is the perfect zoccolo to join our zoccoli-style.
You will find it in our boutique.
